We've got short walks, long walks, family-friendly wanders, dog-friendly strolls, routes with pub pitstops and hikes with dreamy coffee stops, perfect for those wholesome Winchester weekends and short breaks. Expect walks beside precious chalk streams like the River Itchen, which runs right through the heart of Winchester city, along chalk downland, ancient forests, historic droveways, farmland and more.

Scroll down to discover a variety of Winchester walking routes. We've organised them into four sections - 'City walks in Winchester', 'Countryside walks near Winchester', 'Long-distance walking trails from Winchester' and 'Places for a walk in Winchester district' - so you can find exactly what you're after.

Some start and end here while others are long-distance trails which pass through the area. Winchester is the start of the 100-mile South Downs Way, while ancient Winchester Cathedral is a landmark on The Clarendon Way, St James' Way (part of the famous Camino de Santiago trail) and more. These walking routes are all in Winchester city or nearby in the surrounding countryside, villages and market towns. Others are just lovely outdoorsy spots, forests and green spaces that might inspire a wander.

You may find you're near a must-visit attraction, one of Hampshire's vineyards or an award-winning place to eat in Winchester. See you on the trail!

The ancient capital of England, historic Winchester city centre is a lovely place for a stroll. You'll find atmospheric cobbled streets, ancient buildings and plenty of green spaces to explore. Precious chalk stream the River Itchen also runs through the city - its riverbanks make a great walking route that'll lead you out of the city and into the surrounding countryside on either side. If you'd like to explore Winchester's historic city centre on a walking tour, you can find self-guided Winchester city walking routes here and also in the city's Visitor Information Centre. Guided walking tours of Winchester city centre also set off from the Visitor Information Centre daily. If a taste of Hampshire countryside is what you're after, take a wander through city centre nature reserve Winnall Moors, climb St Giles Hill, which is just at the bottom of the high street or scale ancient hill fort St Catherine's Hill, just outside the city centre. Despite being just minutes from the high street and the train station, both Winnall Moors and St Catherine's Hill are officially in the South Downs National Park.

It's so easy to pick up a walking route in Winchester city centre and let it lead you out into the surrounding countryside. Keats Trail, The Itchen Navigation Trail, The Itchen Way and St Swithuns Way all head out of the city along the River Itchen. There are shorter circular routes, but you could easily take on a chunk of a long-distance trail for a there-and-back-again route. Pick your route, get a coffee in your reusable cup and hit the trail.

There are also a great number of beautiful walks to try in the countryside that surrounds Winchester too, from Old Winchester Hill to Micheldever Wood's Archaeological Trail, while the area's pretty villages and market towns are also well placed for walks. Try Alresford's Millenium & Alre Valley Trail, Bishop's Waltham Railway Line or head out of Wickham on the Meon Valley Trail.

A number of long-distance hikes pass through or close to Winchester city, which can be walked in one go over a multi-day adventure or broken into smaller sections. There are a range of routes connected to Winchester's ancient cathedral, like The Clarendon Way, which connects Winchester Cathedral to Salisbury Cathedral, and The Pilgrim's Way, which links Winchester to Canterbury. The St James's Way is part of the world-famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, and runs from Reading to Southampton, via the heart of Winchester.

Walking the South Downs from Winchester

Winchester is the gateway to the South Downs National Park - it's easy to walk from the train station or high street right out of the city into this protected stretch of countryside. The city is also the start of The South Downs Way. Linking Winchester to Eastbourne, The South Downs Way is a 100-mile trail that plots a path through the South Downs National Park along ancient droveways and chalk downs. It starts at Winchester's City Mill and ends near Beachy Head in Eastbourne.

Many walkers and cyclists take on the entire route over multiple days, though it's easily broken down into shorter walks, like Winchester to Cheesefoot Head or Winchester to Exton.
