    About Jane Austen's House

Jane Austen's House in the picturesque Hampshire village of Chawton is one of the most important literary sites in the world. It was in this inspiring cottage that Jane Austen's genius flourished and where she wrote, revised, and had published all six of her globally beloved novels. Today, Jane Austen’s House is a cherished museum with an unparalleled collection of Austen treasures, including Jane’s personal letters and first editions of her novels, items of jewellery and the tiny writing table at which she wrote.

Visitors can step back in time to 1816 and follow in Jane’s footsteps as they explore the rooms where she lived and wrote, from the sunny Drawing Room where she practised the piano every morning, and where she read Pride and Prejudice aloud to a neighbour on the very day she received her first copy, to the vibrant green Dining Room where she wrote, and the cosy bedroom upstairs that we believe she shared with her beloved sister Cassandra.

Explore the pretty cottage garden, try your hand at traditional garden games and enjoy Regency dress up, bonnet designing and more! Browse the unique rage of gifts and books in the beautiful Gift Shop and relax with an ice cream on the lawn. Families can enjoy seasonal trails and follow their visit with a trip to the village playground, set in stunning parkland just opposite the House.

A range of events take place throughout the year including tours, walks, workshops and talks. A series of festivals celebrating the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth will run throughout the year.

Jane Austen and the Art of Writing exhibition now open!

A brand-new permanent exhibition, Jane Austen and the Art of Writing celebrates Jane Austen as a ground-breaking and ambitious writer in the very house where she created her six beloved novels – directly linking Jane Austen’s creative process with the domestic space from which it came. This exhibition is free with house entry.
