From world class history and architecture to a thriving cultural scene and countryside trails for walking and cycling, there’s plenty to do in and around Winchester. The ancient capital of England is a dreamy mix of heritage buildings and green spaces, with independent shops, street markets, characterful pubs, award-winning places to eat and great coffee shops.

The city is big on history, thanks to must-visits like Winchester Cathedral, The Great Hall and The Hospital of St Cross, but we've also got a busy events and festivals calendar as well as buzzy art galleries, theatres, cinemas and more.

Nature lovers will enjoy the area’s chalk streams, ancient landscapes and sparkly dark skies. Winchester boasts city centre nature reserves and water meadows, and further out blends into the surrounding South Downs National Park. The River Itchen leads walkers out of the city on short strolls and long-distance walking trails, while for fans of hikes and bikes The South Downs Way starts right here in the city centre.

Winchester is a brilliant place to explore for families, too. There are loads of fun things to do with kids in Winchester, from playgrounds and soft plays to kids' theatre, museums and attractions for big family days out.

A visit to Winchester isn’t complete without also taking in the district’s charming market towns and pretty rural villages. Wander around Alresford’s colourful Georgian town centre, complete with heritage railway, explore the atmospheric ruins of Bishop’s Waltham Palace or rummage for preloved treasure in Wickham. Don’t forget to visit the area’s vineyards for a glass of something sparkling and sample some of the local food Winchester is known for.

Whether you’re here for a day trip, a weekend or a longer adventure, read on to discover loads of amazing things to do in Winchester.
