Abbey Gardens
📍Winchester city centre
A pretty park in Winchester city centre, Abbey Gardens is at the bottom of Winchester High Street near the Guildhall, the King Alfred statue and Abbey House. Here you'll find neat manicured gardens and a large children's play area. The two parts of the park are divided by the clear waters of the River Itchen.
Need to know: There are toilets and a drinking-water fountain in Abbey Gardens. You'll also find a cart selling Marshfield Farm ice cream on warm days.

You could pick up takeaway fish and chips from Shoal, farm shop treats from Westlands or takeaway sandwiches, salads and cakes from Open House Deli, South Downs Social and more. Abbey Mill has a coffee hut which is open at weekends. Chococo is a great place to head for gelato and sweet treats.
Winchester Cathedral grounds

The grassy grounds of Winchester's ancient cathedral are a popular place to be on a sunny day. There are benches, steps and patches of shade beneath trees for sitting on and enjoying a picnic. Best of all are the incredible views of Winchester Cathedral you can enjoy.
Need to know: The closest toilets are on Market Lane.

St Giles Hill

A grassy, tree-covered hill at the bottom of Winchester High Street, St Giles Hill offers sweeping views back over Winchester. There's a viewpoint which is especially lovely as the sun sets over the city's landmarks. Pack a picnic and head up there for a peaceful pause.
Need to know: There is a short but steep climb to get to the top of St Giles Hill, but you are rewarded the view. The closest public toilets are back on Winchester High Street.

St Catherine's Hill

The foot of St Catherine's Hill, an iron age hill fort in South Downs National Park, is an easy walk from Winchester High Street along the River Itchen and through Winchester's water meadows. Climb the hill, which is topped by a copse of trees, for mega views over green Winchester city.
Need to know: There are more than 300 wooden steps up to the top of St Catherine's Hill. The closest public toilets are at St Catherine’s Park & Ride.

Winnall Moors

A peaceful nature reserve right in Winchester city centre, Winnall Moors is a chalk stream wetland where the River Itchen flows. Follow a trail through the reserve to spot wildlife before stopping for a picnic. There are a few benches and grassy areas to choose from.
Need to know: Only guide and assistance dogs are allowed. The paths are wheelchair and pushchair friendly, but it can get muddy. The closest public toilets are at River Park.

River Park

A large green space, with loads of room for picnics and letting small ones run around. River Park is beside the River Itchen for wildlife spotting and duck feeding. There are also bookable tennis courts, a skate park and a popular children's play area.

Wolvesey Castle

The former home of the influential Bishops of Winchester, Wolvesey Castle is tucked away on College Street behind Winchester Cathedral. The palace is now ruins, largely from the 12th Century. Managed by English Heritage, they are free to explore and open to the public daily. Perfect for an atmospheric picnic.
Need to know: The gates lock in the late afternoon. The closest public toilets are in Abbey Gardens or Market Lane.

Oram's Arbour
📍Winchester city centre
This big green space, bordered by pretty townhouses, was once part of an Iron Age enclosure. It's now a peaceful, grassy park with views over Winchester. There are a few benches and a children's play area.
Need to know: No toilets. Handy location close to Winchester Train Station. The closest public toilets are by The Arc.
🧺 Nearby place to pick up picnic food: Bring takeaway pizza from Pi Pizza, or treats from The Little Kitchen Bistro or Olive Fulflood on Stockbridge Road. Around the train station, you'll also find picnic fare at Røst and Waiting Room.
Winchester's water meadows
Winchester is known for the precious chalk stream which runs through its city centre. The River Itchen also leads walkers and nature-seekers out of the city in either direction. If you follow it south, along either Keats Trail or The Itchen Way/Itchen Navigation Trail you'll wander by Winchester's water meadows. If you follow Keats Trail out of the city centre, the path is quite tight to the river, but there are benches and small grassy spots to lay a picnic blanket down. The route widens near The Hospital of St Cross where there are spots for a scenic picnic. If you follow the Itchen Way the path takes you past Kingsgate Lawn Tennis Club and some playing fields, where people often pause for picnics beneath the trees.
Need to know: The closest public toilets are at St Catherine’s Park & Ride.

Crab Wood

An ancient woodland just outside of Winchester city, Crab Wood is rich with wildlife. The local nature reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a stunning location for a walk or picnic any time of year. Find a peaceful spot beneath a tree or head for the open green space near the Crab Wood car park.
Need to know: There are a number of free car parks in the area. There are no facilities at Crab Wood. During bluebell season it's important to stick to the paths.

Farley Mount Monument

A large area of chalk downland and ancient woodland on the outskirts of Winchester city, Farley Mount Country Park is named after the Farley Mount Monument, a hilltop monument to a horse named "Beware Chalk Pit". There is a pleasant walk to the monument, which offers incredible views over the surrounding countryside. It's an ideal spot for a picnic on a sunny day.
Pitt Down, where ponies are often found grazing, and West Wood are also great spots nearby. Children will enjoy finding the natural playground inside West Wood, which has dens, balancing logs and small swings.
Need to know: There are a number of free carparks in the area. There are no facilities in Farley Mount Country Park.

Micheldever Woods

Make a beeline for picnic benches in a quiet spot near the car park or head into the woods to find your own place. Walking routes lead you through the ancient Beech woodland, where you'll find plenty of peaceful places for a picnic. Choose a tree to sit beneath, borrow a den or pick a fallen tree trunk to perch on.
Need to know: There are no facilities at Micheldever Woods. During bluebell season it's important to stick to the paths.

The Grange at Northington
📍near Alresford
The Grange at Northington is a grand spot for a picnic. Looked after by English Heritage, the impressive Greek revival building and its landscaped grounds are open to the public and free to enter year round. You'll often have it all to yourself, though it's busier in June and July when it becomes the setting for the annual Grange Opera Festival.
Need to know: There are no facilities at The Grange. Public access is restricted to the car park and the grounds of the building only. The gates lock in the late afternoon and it sometimes closes early or is closed to the public for events.

New Alresford Memorial Park
The ideal stop off on a wander through the pretty market town of Alresford, New Alresford Memorial Park is a secluded spot near the River Arle with benches and shady spots. The grassy park used to be an open-air swimming pool. You can find it while walking the town's Millennium Trail, which leads you along the river past beautiful historic houses and a community-run duck food table. Nearby Arlebury Park is also a good stop off for a picnic and has a children's play area.
Need to know: There are no facilities at New Alresford Memorial Park. The closest public toilets are in Station Road.

Wickham Water Meadows

In the heart of the town, Wickham's water meadows are a pretty spot to relax and enjoy your food. The space was historically used for grazing cattle but it has now been transformed into a peaceful haven, ideal for a picnic near edge of the River Meon.
Need to know: Wickham Water Meadows are close to the start of the Meon Valley Trail if you fancy a walk before or after your picnic. There are no facilities at Wickham Water Meadows. The closest public toilets are in Station Road.

West Walk

Free to enter and looked after by English Heritage, Bishop's Waltham Palace is now vast, atmospheric ruins just a short walk from the town centre. Make use of one of the picnic benches which sit in the shade of the huge palace walls, or find your own spot to lay a picnic blanket among the ancient stones.
Need to know: There are no facilities at Bishop's Waltham Palace. The closest public toilets are in Houchin Street car park. The gates close in the late afternoon.

Old Winchester Hill

An ancient site with stunning views of the surrounding downs and the coastline in the distance, Old Winchester Hill is 150 acres of nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the South Downs National Park. The area is teeming with wildlife, and a popular place for bird spotting. Visitors will discover evidence of an Iron Age hill fort and the earlier Bronze Age barrows or burial mounds at the top of the hill, which is an amazing place for a picnic with a view.
Need to know: There is limited car parking. There are no facilities at Old Winchester Hill.
