Festival season in Winchester
The summer months in Winchester are filled with celebrations of food and drink. Make the most of A Taste of Winchester from 22 June to 5 July 2026. The programme features a series of special events, tasting menus and offers celebrating the best of local flavours. Winchester is also playing host to Foodies Festival on 17 to 19 July 2026, serving up live music, live cooking demos and fantastic street food at the UK's largest celebration of food and drink.
Elsewhere The Garden Festival is putting on 65 events in 26 venues across 17 days, from alfresco feasts, watercolour workshops and flower-pressing sessions to open-air art exhibitions, sculpture trails, open gardens and more.
Winchester's music festival scene is eclectic. The Grange Festival, 2 June to 12 July, showcases exceptional opera, dance, jazz and more, on a breath-taking English country estate. Enjoy the family-friendly Wickham Festival, featuring live music on a variety of stages plus a host of other entertainment from 30 July to 2 August. And just outside Winchester city in South Downs surrounds is Boomtown, a unique, psychedelic festival. You can expect a line-up that dances across musical genres, including reggae, punk, electronic, folk, and more from 12 to 16 August 2026.
Outdoor activities for summer in Winchester
Winchester district is the perfect place to dust off the cobwebs and get exploring outside. We've got plenty of walking trails - around the city, in the South Downs National Park, and in our charming market towns - so be sure to pack your walking boots. Experience panoramic views of Winchester from St Catherine’s Hill, an iron age hill fort on the edge of the South Downs with this family-friendly trail. Or, you can carry on past Hockley Viaduct to The Bridge Inn in Shawford, an idyllic riverside pub offering delicious food and a stunning terrace.
If you are only in the city for the day and don’t want to miss a thing, the City Walk is the perfect place to start. You will meander along the bank of River Itchen towards Kingsgate Village. Stop for some lunch at the award-winning Wykeham Arms, shop for books in the wonderfully quaint P&G Wells, and perhaps go for a tour of the medieval Winchester College.
For experienced walkers, the 100-mile South Downs Way is the perfect route to explore some of the country’s most breath-taking scenery. The long-distance walk starts in Winchester city centre, taking walkers thruogh the South Downs National Park all the way to Eastbourne. The first stretch will guide you from Winchester to Exton, a quaint village nestled in the South Downs National Park.
