🌼 Blooms from February to May

📍Inner and Outer Close, Winchester
Winchester Cathedral is surrounded by luscious daffodils in spring. Meander along the flagstone paths in front of the cathedral, spotting blooms by the entrance to the gift shop and café. Through Curle's Passage to the right of the cathedral entrance, the Inner Close also has pretty flower beds, shady trees and benches to take in the sights.

📍Abbey Gardens, Winchester
The flowerbeds in Abbey Gardens are in full bloom in spring. With the River Itchen running through, this is a charming spot to take the load off during a busy day of exploring.

📍St Giles Hill Graveyard, Winchester
This Victorian graveyard is abundant in wildlife and flowers, making it a beautiful and atmospheric walk in the spring and summer months. Daffodils flower at the base of the lime trees that line the main pathway.

📍Jane Austen's House, Chawton (pictured)
The cottage where Jane Austen lived and wrote her famous novels is also home to a breath-taking English country garden. Enjoy a Regency-style promenade through the spring blooms just as Jane would have.

📍The Avenue, Alresford
The first signs of spring in the quaint market town of Alresford can be spotted on The Avenue. Along the grassy verges, daffodils bloom beneath the trees, making it perfect for a walk before stopping into the town for shopping and refreshments.

📍The Vyne, Basingstoke
The Vyne, a National Trust property around 20 miles from Winchester, boasts a bountiful display of daffodils each year. You can find them in the Walled Garden and along the South Drive, leading to the 17th century summerhouse.

📍Hinton Ampner, Alresford
Another National Trust gem, Hinton Ampner is a red brick historic house, whose gardens become carpeted in hundreds of daffodils in the spring. Explore the picturesque walled kitchen garden and the orchard, where the old Tudor house used to sit.

Places to see crocuses near Winchester

🌼 Blooms from February to April

📍Winnall Moors Nature Reserve, Winchester (pictured)
As you approach from the city centre, you’ll pass two bridges between Eastgate Street and Water Lane where crocuses have sprung up beside the river. Just a few metres away is the entrance to Winnall Moors Nature Reserve, a remarkable area of calm in the heart of the city.

📍St Giles Hill Graveyard, Winchester
St Giles Hill Graveyard also boasts a few bright bursts of crocuses, making it a tapestry of yellow and purple when the flowers are in full bloom. They tend to crop up in small patches between the more abundant daffodils, but are no less striking to see atop the old graves.

📍King Alfred Statue, Winchester
Crocus bulbs are planted beneath the iconic King Alfred statue every year by Winchester Rotary to mark World Polio Day. The purple blooms represent the purple dye used to mark children's little fingers as a sign that they have received the polio vaccination.

🌼 Blooms from April to May

📍Micheldever Wood, Micheldever (pictured)
In spring, the ancient woodland of Micheldever Woods is turned into a carpet of bluebells - said to be some of the most beautiful in the UK. You can explore the woods with the Archaeological Trail or the Family Trail (which is suitable for buggies).

📍Farley Mount, Winchester
Most recognisable for its 18th century monument, dedicated to a beloved local horse, Farley Mount Country Park is also home to rich woodlands. Parnholt Wood in particular has a magnificent display of bluebells. Take a circular stroll from the nearby village of King's Somborne or from the monument itself, the perfect way to spend a spring day.

📍The Vyne, Basingstoke
The ancient woodlands behind The Vyne National Trust estate is abundant with bluebells in April. Morgaston Woods has several circular walks you can choose from which will take you past some hidden history, including the remains of a medieval fish pond and a World War Two storage site.

📍Hinton Ampner, Alresford
Another National Trust gem, the four-mile Dutton Estate Walk comes alive in spring as a dazzling display of native bluebells and wood anemones carpet the woodland floor. Be sure to also keep an eye out for the wood's animal inhabitants - badgers, roe deer, foxes and even bats!

📍Shutts Copse Nature Reserve, West Meon
A little hazel coppiced woodland in West Meon, the reserve is scattered with mature oak trees and beautiful wildflowers. A path encircles the whole reserve, from which you can take in the bluebells and hear the native woodpeckers in the trees.

🌼 Blooms from May to June

📍Kingsgate Street, Winchester (pictured)
On the crossroads between Kingsgate Street and Romans' Road, a grand gate into Winchester College can be found flourishing with purple wisteria. The blooms look their best in May, which is also the perfect time to take a tour of Winchester College's beautiful gardens.

📍The Weirs, Winchester
The River Itchen runs through the heart of Winchester, great for a city centre stroll. Follow the path next to The Bishop on the Bridge to The Weirs. Wisteria grows along the wooden bridge about half way along this riverside walk.

📍The Vyne, Basingstoke
In the sunken garden between the main house and the tea room, a beautiful wisteria tree blooms in late spring. Soak up the ambience before treating yourself to a walk through the grounds - or a scone in the café!

📍Hinton Ampner, Alresford
Climbing up the house's brickwork as well as in the formal gardens, Hinton Ampner's wisteria is a must-see in spring. The view from the walled garden also boasts beautiful views extending for miles across the Hampshire countryside.

📍Dean Garnier Garden, Winchester
Within the Inner Close of Winchester Cathedral, you'll spot Dean Garnier Gardens, a tranquil walled garden which stands on the site of a medieval monks’ dormitory. Bring a picnic, wander through the herb garden or take a moment for yourself under the arbours.

📍Queen Eleanor’s Garden, Winchester
The garden is located through the grand south doors of The Great Hall and named after two Queen Eleanors: Eleanor of Provence, wife of Henry III, and Queen Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward I. Its medieval herbarium, tunnel arbour and stone benches make it feel as though you've travelled through time.

📍The Hospital of St Cross, Winchester
Journey along the Keats Trail, through Winchester’s water meadows, to the Hospital of St Cross. Here, you can ask for the traditional 'Wayfarers’ Dole' given to visiting pilgrims, before basking in the calmness of the Master’s Gardens.

Led by members of the Winchester College gardening team throughout the spring and summer, Garden Tours explore the vast biodiversity and horticultural history of the beautiful hidden gardens at Winchester College. They only run one tour per month, so be sure to book early!

📍Stem & Green Flower Farm
Based in Headbourne Worthy, just outside Winchester, Stem and Green Flower Farm grows three acres of seasonal and sustainably cut flowers. Buy buckets and bouquets from March, or pick-your-own stems in the summer!

📍Long Barn
In the market town of Alresford, Long Barn is home to Heritage Collection lavender gardens which they use to create a range of natural home and body products. Wander through the gardens, sit outside with a cup of tea and browse the barn for lovely, local goods.

📍Lower Norton Flower Farm
Lower Norton Flower Farm is a family‑run flower farm set across four acres, specialising in quintessentially English country-garden flowers. They run pick-your-own and flower arranging workshops throughout the year.
