From immersive art exhibitions to half-marathon hikes, there are plenty of reasons to enjoy January in Winchester
January might be the coldest, darkest (and often named as the most depressing) month of the year, but there's actually loads of reasons to feel excited about the first few weeks of 2026 in Winchester.
If you're looking for cheap things to do this month, we've got winter walks and a whole host of free events taking place across the district. Set on learning a skill, trying something new or embracing the healthier things in life? You could try painting, hiking, singing, somatic movement and more. We've also got cultural big-hitters, like the arrival of Luke Jarman's 'Helios' (a giant, glowing Sun) in Winchester Cathedral and immersive art experience Van Gogh Alive at Winchester Science Centre.
Remember, January can be a time for celebration, too. There are Burns Night parties to go to and Jane Austen's House are putting on an entire festival in honour of Pride & Prejudice. But if you want to spend the month inside staying cosy, we don't blame you either. January is the perfect month for exploring Winchester's cosy pubs and restorative wellness spaces.
