While the 17th century house is just for humans, The Vyne is definitely worth a visit for its dog-friendly gardens and woodland walks. With the dog on a lead, take a stroll through the Lime Avenue leading to a 17th-century summerhouse and 600-year-old oak tree. You can also explore the walled garden and orchard and beautiful lakeside paths. For a longer route, there are several trails through Morgaston Woods, which are packed with wildlife and bluebells in the spring. Afterwards, the Brewhouse tearoom is the perfect spot to enjoy an iconic National Trust cream tea with your four-legged friend.

📍 Basingstoke
Hinton Ampner

The Hinton Ampner estate is set in the heart of the South Downs and has over 200 hectares of walking routes. You and the dog can explore the gardens of the house: a warren of lawns, paths, blossoming flowers and home-grown produce (sniffing is encouraged, but be mindful in the kitchen garden). Follow one of the estate walks in the sprawling countryside beyond the house, including the historic Battle of Cheriton site. Back at the house, dogs are welcome in the café and second hand bookshop.

Wolvesey Castle

Wolvesey Castle is a medieval palace, built in the 12th century for the Bishops of Winchester. Wander the historic ruins, grassy courtyards and peaceful paths with your dog, and learn about the kings and bishops that held power there. Wolvesey Castle is just a stone's throw from Winchester Cathedral and Winchester College, making it a great dog-friendly detour while exploring the city centre.

Gilbert White's House & Garden

Explore 25 acres of the house and gardens that once belonged to pioneering naturalist, Gilbert White. The walk through the gardens is a perfect day out for nature and dog lovers. The Six Quarters, the Herb Garden and the Kitchen Garden are all planted with species that White wrote about in his garden diary, and the Naturalists' Garden contains some of the first plants recorded in Hampshire by White. You and your pup can then pop into White's Cafe to refuel.
