Take a holiday with Jane Austen

Winchester Cathedral
Winchester Cathedral

Are you longing for a holiday? Jane Austen knew this feeling as well. Visit Jane Austen’s House in Chawton and explore the Jane Austen on Holiday exhibition for a seaside escape.

The garden's at Jane Austen's House museum on a sunny day

Discover Jane Austen’s relationship with the seaside, from Dawlish to Worthing to Lyme Regis and Brighton, in this mini exhibition celebrating bracing coastal walks and maybe even a holiday romance.

As you explore be sure to look out for the museum’s copy of Sanditon, Jane Austen’s unfinished seaside novel, handwritten by her sister Cassandra in three notebooks. You can also see a first edition of Persuasion with its glorious ‘tourist brochure’ description of Lyme Regis. The museum will also be showing illustrations, fashion plates and seaside sketches.

If you are unable to visit Jane Austen’s House an online version of the exhibition has been created so you can enjoy it at home.
