Sample street food at Helch Market
Discover Winchester's first and only street food market. There's a huge beer garden and a food hall. They host comedy nights, jazz nights, chess clubs and more. Pop in for a pint, a matcha or a mega burger. You can also co-work from here for free during the day. Downstairs at Helch Market you'll find a speakeasy-style bar called The Grow Room. Wednesday night is Student Night.
Grab a slice at 5 Boroughs Pizza
Pick up a beer and a slice of New York-style pizza on Jewry Street. You can also join MHAC social running club which finishes here for discounted slices. Other great pizza spots include Pizza Tavern, Pi Pizza and Three Joes.

The city is home to Winchester City Street Market, which is held Thursday to Saturday, as well as Hampshire Farmer's Market, The Antiques, Vintage, Retro & Collectables Market and The Art & Design Market which rotate Sundays. Climb up St Catherine's Hill
An ancient Iron Age hill fort on the edge of Winchester city, St Catherine's Hill is part of the South Downs National Park. Head out of the city along our precious chalk stream The River Itchen to find it and climb the 300+ wooden steps to the top. It's a lush spot for a sunset picnic with a view.
Chase a PB at Winchester Park Run
Get your free exercise fix at Winchester's Park Run. It loops around River Park, a big leafy green space in the city centre every Saturday morning. For more free outdoor exercise in Winchester, try Park Yoga, which runs on Sunday mornings during the summer.
Marvel at Winchester Cathedral
You can't visit or live in Winchester without seeing the cathedral. The heart of the historic centre, Winchester's Cathedral is open to the public daily. Admire its exterior while people-watching in the cathedral grounds (it's a great place for a picnic) or step inside to take a look around. You can book Tower Tours to climb up high into the cathedral's roof for unbeatable city views.
Dance the night away at The Railway Inn
Winchester's much-loved live music venue, The Railway Inn is the place to head for gigs, club nights, open mic, comedy nights, poetry nights and more.

Explore ancient Wolvesey Castle
Free to visit, Wolvesey Castle is an atmospheric ruin behind Winchester Cathedral, accessed on College Street. The ruins largely date from the 12th century and are a lesson in the medieval Bishops of Winchester, the rich and powerful men who once lived here.
Get lost in The Winchester Bookshop
Browse for second hand reads at The Winchester Bookshop, where you'll find three floors of intriguing pre-loved books. Book lovers will also want to carve out time to wander around Winchester's Oxfam bookshop, The Deanery Bookstall, which is set within the cathedral's Inner Close, and P&G Wells, a historic spot affectionately known as Jane Austen's book shop.

Plan a Winchester pub crawl
Winchester is known for having a really great pub scene, from The Mucky Duck and The Westgate to St James Tavern and The Black Boy. Walk along the River Itchen
Precious chalk stream the River Itchen runs through the heart of Winchester. Get to know it by wandering along The Weirs or going wildlife spotting in Winnall Moors (it's a very easy loop). You can also head out of the city into South Downs National Park countryside by following walking routes along the Itchen in either direction.
Play a Winchester escape game
Get a bunch of mates together and play a ClueCapers escape game. They run them at their site near the King Alfred Statue as well as in The Hospital of St Cross, a genuine medieval building that becomes the setting for a medieval escape game.
