With non-essential retail reopening on 12 April we don’t need much of an excuse to visit some of our favourite independent shops in the Winchester district. Celebrate the change in season with these five ways to bring in the new this spring.

Please also continue to follow government advice and check the individual business websites for their COVID-19 information and opening times. If you would rather shop online most of our independent retailers offer online shopping options – please check the individual business websites for details.

Flex your green fingers

This spring get outside and bring your garden to life. If you are looking for inspiration look no further than Winchester’s beautiful gardens throughout the district. Take a visit the Abbey gardens and be inspired by the stunning colours that surround you from the gorgeous flower beds that line the garden.

Chawton House gardens might have the motivation you are looking for. Believed to be the model for Mr Knightley’s Donwell Abbey, Chawton House sits proudly in beautiful grounds restored to the English Landscape style with a lime avenue and terraces.

If you’re looking for a variety of options for your garden look no further than Gilbert White’s House. With a large selection of gardens include the Six Quarters, Herb garden and The Orchard there is a garden there for everyone.

Take a visit to the garden centres around Winchester for the perfect plants and equipment for your new project. Browse the Hiller Garden Centre and make your garden your haven this spring.

Spring could be the perfect time to start your new reading adventure. Do you have a book you’ve always wanted to read, have you been recommended a novel but not had a chance to try it yet or are you looking to be inspired? Spring could be the perfect time to relax with a good read.

Visit the Winchester Bookshop with three floors of antiquarian, second-hand, vintage and nearly new books ready to be discovered. Not sure where to start? Take advantage of the knowledge of the enthusiastic booksellers who work in the shop and let them guide you to your next adventure.

Wander along College Street until you come to P&G Wells bookshop who have been selling books since 1729. They offer an eclectic selection of books for adults and children and are sure to stock your next read.
