Winchester Cathedral, one of Europe's finest medieval cathedrals, has had a choir singing in its halls since the 14th century. Today, The Cathedral Choir is made up of Boy Choristers from the Pilgrim's School, Girl Choristers from schools in the Winchester and Hampshire area, and Lay Clerks, professional musicians who sing alto, tenor and bass. Throughout the year, the Cathedral welcomed boys and girls to find out more about life as a Chorister!
Does your son love to sing?
Winchester Cathedral's Boy Choristers are aged between 8 and 13 in school years 4 to 8. All boys attend The Pilgrim's School, set in the beautiful surroundings of the Cathedral Close, and receive bursaries up to 100%.
The Cathedral Music Department and The Pilgrims’ School are glad to meet with prospective choristers and their parents at any time during the year to discuss extraordinary musical and educational opportunities available for choristers. Preliminary voice auditions can also be arranged at any time in the year.
Can girls join the Cathedral Choir?
Girls have been an essential part of the Winchester Cathedral Choir since the 1999, and a new generation is invited to join today!
The Girl Choristers are made up of around 20 girls aged 11–18, all from schools in the Winchester and Hampshire area. They perform at weekly Sunday services during term time, at services and concerts at Easter and Christmas, and on tours, recordings and broadcasts. Plus, the girls receive a generous bursary for instrumental tuition.
Enquiries about informal auditions can be made at any time during the year. A formal audition to become a girl chorister will take place on Saturday 21st March 2026.
