The Curator's Cellar: Rorke's Drift

The Royal Logistic Corps Museum and Caviste Wines invite you to step into the Curator’s Cellar for a unique wine tasting experience for autumn 2026. Enjoy a curated selection of wines from around the world, presented by one of Caviste’s wine experts, while we share fascinating stories of extraordinary military medals from the same regions.

New for autumn is the inclusion of the Victoria Cross awarded to  Acting Assistant Commissary James Dalton, for conspicuous gallantry during the attack on Rorke’s Drift  by the Zulus on the night of the 22nd January 1879. This iconic medal is not normally on public display and is being brought out of secure storage, under heavy guard, for this event. The story of Rorke’s Drift and Dalton’s heroism will be accompanied by a South African wine.

Hosted in the intimate setting of the museum’s medal room, this unique event is a must for connoisseurs of fine wine and military history.

Price includes entrance to the museum after dark, samples of six exceptional wines, tasting notes and an introduction to each from a wine industry expert, and a short talk on military medals earned in the same region that each wine was produced from the Museum’s Director and the Curator of the Royal Army Service Corps and Royal Corps of Transport medal collection.

Water, cheese and crackers are provided to cleanse the palate between wines.

Please note any allergies at the time of booking – unfortunately we cannot accommodate sulphite sensitivities due to the nature of the wines.

The museum is served by taxi firms operating out of Winchester and guests cars can be left in the museum car park overnight if required.
