Who was Gilbert White?

Gilbert White is a well-known and loved natural scientist who was inspired over 250 years ago by the stunning countryside in and around Selborne where his family house resides. He was responsible for a number of major discoveries in the world of natural history including his identification of the harvest mouse in this country among many more. He is widely regarded as the father of ecology and is a globally significant natural scientist.

Gilbert White was first a gardener, and it was the love of the outdoors and of growing things that stimulated his interest in nature – when you visit the house be sure to take a walk through the many gardens within the grounds.
