Celebrating Independent Businesses in Denmead

11 July 2023

This July, Visit Winchester is celebrating Independent Business Month by visiting some of the best independents in the district. Find out more about Winchester district’s market towns here.

Denmead is one of the district’s largest villages and has plenty of independent businesses as a result. Popular with walkers travelling through Hambledon, Southwick and the Meon Valley, it is the perfect place to stop off and see the local sights. Residents are keen supporters of Denmead’s independents and would love to welcome visitors from the district – and beyond – to see what’s on offer.

Barnard’s Restaurant

Hambledon Road, Denmead, PO7 6NU

Family-run since 1986, Barnard’s Restaurant and Coffee House is a local favourite that prides itself on good food, locally sourced ingredients, and a friendly atmosphere. Like most village staples, its regulars have been enjoying tea and a bite to eat here for years.

The restaurant also plays host to many societies and associations within the village, such as the Women’s Institute, Denmead Twinning Association and the Parish Council. And it’s no wonder so many people see it as the social hub of the village: the space is bright and welcoming, with walls bedecked with plants and bunting. If you fancy sitting outside, there is also seating available under the front awning and the garden. You can find their menu here.

Parkers

Hambledon Road, Denmead, PO7 6NU

Parkers is a hardware store that has been providing DIY materials to Denmead residents for over 30 years, and there has been a hardware store on the site since the 1960s. As you walk in, it is a virtually unchanged picture of the ‘village shop’ – what it lacks in frills, it makes up for in old-fashioned charm.

Martin, well-known in the village for his handyman skills, helps to run the shop. He has worked in Parkers for over a decade and feels that it’s the hands-on customer service that keeps locals and visitors coming back time and again: Parkers will assemble your garden machinery, give a demonstration on how it works, fill it with oil and make sure it gets home with you safely. He says you don’t get that kind of service in B&Q! Find them online here.

Niche

Hambledon Road, Denmead, PO7 6NU

Niche opened in Denmead during the Covid-19 pandemic, fulfilling owner Mandy’s lifelong dream of owning her own boutique. It sells one-of-a-kind clothing, homeware, and lifestyle pieces within their quaint storefront on Hambledon Road.

Inside is a breath of fresh air away from high-street shops. Each piece has been selected specifically and presented with care, making browsing a joy. The clothes are bright and perfect for summer, while their homeware is high-quality and includes some local gems such as Hampshire Wick candles. You can find Niche on Facebook and Instagram.
