Royal Blood

This trail begins at the Guildhall Winchester.

From the Guildhall Winchester turn left and head up the High Street.

Carrying on up the High Street slightly to God Begot House.

Carry on along the High Street to Westgate Museum.

Walk through the Westgate and continue along the High Street, turning left at Castle Avenue to The Great Hall.

Walking back up Castle Avenue, turn left to Romsey Road and the Winchester Military Museum complex entry gates are to the left.

Turn right out of the Winchester Military Quarter and head back down the High Street. When you reach the Buttercross turn right into the Square, then continue straight and you will see Winchester Cathedral right in front of you.

Staying in the Cathedral grounds, though nothing remains today, it is believed that the Saxon royal palace at Winchester was built in close proximity to the cathedral, most likely on what is now Cathedral Green.

Passing under the arch to the right of Winchester Cathedral, you will enter the Inner Close. Walk through the Inner Close to Cheyney Court (one of the most photographed buildings in Winchester), through into Kingsgate Village and turn left on College Street and you will discover Winchester College.

Carrying on along College Street and on your left you will see Wolvesley Castle.

Take a walk along the river and the city walls. When you reach the High Street again turn left. In front of you you will see the great statue of King Alfred. This is where this walk ends.
