Instagrammable Winchester

Winchester College
Winchester College

There is no denying the beauty of Winchester with its historical buildings, pretty streets, vibrant green spaces. Here our style ambassador Lauren Booth, AKA @AWinchesterWoman, takes us on a tour of the most photogenic locations in the city that will give your Instagram grid the wow factor.

The term ‘picture-perfect’ must have been coined by someone visiting Winchester, this city is a living-breathing postcard. After visiting Winchester, you’ll wish Instagram allowed more than 10 photos on one post!

Here’s my favourite Instagrammable spots:

The Grounds surrounding the Gurkha Museum
The perfectly pruned trees paired with a majestic water fountain creates an elegant backdrop for any photo – you’ll think you’ve stepped into a movie!

Gurkha Museum

Canon Street
Often used to film period dramas, you really will think you’ve time travelled when you walk these cobbled streets.

Winchester Cathedral
Don’t forget to snap a photo in front of Europe’s most magnificent medieval cathedrals. Certainly the most impressive building in the city, of course you can take some photos right outside the front, but here’s some unusual angles you may not have considered!

Dean Garnier Garden (found in the inner close of Winchester Cathedral’s historic grounds)

Curles Passage
It’s a rite of passage to have your photograph here upon visiting, here’s me on my graduation day many years ago

The garden of the cathedral Café

Cheyney’s Court and Porters Lodge
Both 15th Century constructions and wonderful examples of half timber architecture. If you’re visiting in summer, there’ll be a sea of hydrangeas in front (pictured below). A short walk from the cathedral.

The Buttercross monument, Winchester High St
Sit on the steps of this 15th century monument to snap a candid shot in the centre of Winchester’s high street.

St Giles Hill
The perfect viewpoint to admire the city in one glimpse.

St Catherine’s Hill
If you’re feeling athletic, climb the stairs of St Catherine’s Hill to capture a view of Winchester and beyond.

The Mayors House, Winchester
Located in Abbey Gardens at the bottom of the high street, this typically English courtyard garden is the perfect place for a quintessentially English snap.

The University of Winchester, West Downs Campus, Art Gallery
With its minimalist interiors, clean lines and industrial walls, this is giving Kim Kardashian vibes. The perfect backdrop which will be sure to bring some culture to your feed! You can check their website to see what’s exhibiting.

On the topic of galleries, you may also enjoy…

The Treasury at Winchester College
Open daily 2pm-4pm, this is great if you’re a little camera shy but have great hair! A great backdrop for a ‘candid’ shot.

The Winchester Water Meadow House
One of the most beautiful houses can be found on this walk, hidden by greenery with so much character. Keep walking and you’ll see fields which are often occupied by farm animals. In the river you’ll find swans and more!

Mulberry House
This Grade II Listed, predominantly Georgian, family house is a popular backdrop for fashion bloggers. You’ll find this tucked away on St Thomas Street.
