Welcome to Winchester’s favourite heritage festival

Every September Winchester throws open its doors to celebrate our heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.

This year the festival runs from 8 – 17 September 2023 and the theme for is Creativity Unwrapped, celebrating the colourful history of creativity.

Whether your interests are medieval or modern, in the everyday experience of people throughout history, technological advances, or courtly clashes, there is an event for you to enjoy at this year’s HODs.

City Museum is where you can find out about the fascinating story of Winchester, King Alfred’s royal city and the ancient capital of England. They are also hosting an Exhibition of paintings by local artists.

The whole family can enjoy the treasure trail which takes you around the high street, follow the trail, solve the clues and answer the questions. The trail map can picked up from the Visitor Information Centre and completed trail maps can be dropped off there too.

Winchester College

Winchester College are hosting several events, from a self-guided treasury tour, a tour of the college’s archives along with guided tours that take in Chamber Court, Chapel, College Hall, Cloisters and the 17th Century School building.

There are talks at the University of Winchester, backstage tours of Theatre Royal and Chesil Theatre.
