Bishop’s Waltham is a vibrant and historic market town set in the glorious Hampshire countryside. If you venture into the town centre you will be greeted by a variety of well-loved, local independent shops.

Hylands has been in the market town for many years, offering fresh produce to locals and visitors looking for quality and outstanding taste. We talk to owners of the family business, father and son Phil and Neil Channon.

When was Hylands established?

Hylands has been with the Channon family for over 35 years and a part of the village for many more.

What does Hylands offer to visitors?

Hylands offers a wide selection of fresh, high quality produce, locally grown where possible, supporting local farmers and businesses in the area. All our stock is bought fresh from market daily, offering a wide variety to our customers.

What sets Hylands apart from other shops in the street?

Hylands can offer locally-grown produce freshly picked from the fields daily. Along with a wide variety of high quality goods. We also support local farmers and sellers of home produced honey and apple juice from the area.

What measures have you put in place to reassure and protect your customers and staff?

We have provided all of our staff with the appropriate PPE to ensure they feel safe serving the community. We have provided sanitiser stations at the entrance of the shop as well as the till area for all to use. We have clear signs to support the extra measure in place. We have reduced the number of customers in the shop at any one time to ensure that we can maintain the social distancing guidelines in line with the government recommendations.

We have provided a delivery service to all our customers in the local area and surrounding areas who are high risk, vulnerable or shielding during COVID-19, as well as a click and collect service to all customers during this time. This has been greatly welcomed and ensures all our customers are supported by us where possible.

Phoebe Kerton has been working at Hylands for 8 years and we asked her what her favourite thing about working at Hylands is…

“The best thing about working at Hylands is the lovely team, and being a part of a family-run business makes this a unique and special place to work. All of our customers are friendly and supportive of our shop. I like building positive relationships with our shoppers and supporting our community.”
