It is not only the trees to take in, in this part of the walk as there is so much history and beautiful buildings to explore too.
In the cathedral grounds, you will find a Bull Bay tree (Magnolia Graniflora), a Tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) and a Turkey Oak tree (Quercus cerris).
The Bull Bay tree is an unusual evergreen, Magnolia with large, leathery leaves with a glossy dark-green colour on top and a bronzed, furry underneath, which produces huge, creamy flowers in late summer (August/September).
The Tulip tree is a large tree with distinctively shaped leaves that turn a butter-yellow in autumn. The flowers are tulip-shaped, yellowish-green, marked with orange within.
The Turkey Oak tree is a broadleaf tree that was introduced to the UK as an ornamental tree in the 18th century. On older trees, the trunk fissures are often streaked with orange near the base. I wonder how old this tree is…
