Recognising the importance of Winchester as a centre of royal power, William the Conqueror built a palace here, after his conquest of England in 1066. Though very little trace of these buildings remain, archaeological evidence suggests that the palace kitchens
may have been sited at what is now 28–29 High Street. You can see a plaque commemorating William’s palace on the side of St. Lawrence Church, which is believed to have been built on the site of the royal chapel in William’s palace.
