On 16 May the Winchester Mayfest will be hosting lots of Morris dance teams as usual, with opportunities to have a go yourself, and towards the end of the day there will be a mass dance for audience participation. There will also be sword dancers and Appalachian clog dancers and a Polish dance group from Southampton, in all some 39 dance sides.
Sides dance at sites all around the centre of the city and in St Lawrence’s church there will be music from three folk orchestras, the Southampton Folk Orchestra, the FolkActive Youth Ensemble and the Hampshire Youth Folk Ensemble.
A highlight of the day will be the show dances performed by many of the dance sides with the Mayor of Winchester in attendance. This will be followed by the mass dance for you the audience to join in. You could also get the chance to join in with some of the dance groups during the day at various venues.
The event is a festival and is called Mayfest simply because it is run in May each year. The Mayfest has been an event in Winchester for many years, under various guises, and we hope that the Winchester Mayfest will continue for many more years to come. So come to the Mayfest and see what it is all about!
