Inexpensive nineteenth-century reprints helped make Jane Austen canonical, yet many early lowbrow versions of her novels remain unrecorded and unstudied. Professor Barchas describes her democratising approach to reception history as “hard-core bibliography meets the Antiques Roadshow.”

Janine Barchas is the Louann and Larry Temple Centennial Professor in English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin.
