Speaker: Lewis Sharpe – Member of the Palmerston Forts Society
This talk will cover the history of Fort Nelson. You will hear about the political and strategic context in which the decision was made to build the Fort, how it was intended to be armed and how and why the subsequent operational life of the Fort differed from these plans.
New uses in the first half of the 20th century were followed by abandonment and dereliction but the determination of local government, sympathetic institutions and some highly motivated individuals and clubs led to its rescue and rebirth.
