A fascinating local history talk by Barton Stacey History Group covering the results of its research into the impact of the “Swing Riots”.

In the early 1830’s the agricultural landscape was one of deprivation. The corn laws had artificially increased the price of bread, automation was taking away the jobs of farm workers and instead of full time employment workers were employed on a day to day basis (the original zero hours contracts).

Across the country agricultural workers rebelled and the Dever Valley was at the centre of this uprising. Many Barton Stacey men were involved and the establishment was harsh in quashing the movement with two Barton Stacey men hanged and many transported. This talk outlines the background to the events and chronicles some of the Barton Stacey men at the centre of the unrest.
