Welcome to England’s largest festival of history and culture.

Every September thousands of volunteers across England organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. Winchester is throwing open its doors to celebrate our heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.

Join Winchester writer and broadcaster John Pilkington guides us around the historic area of Canon Street, telling stories about its much-loved and often eccentric characters, like the Black Canons and Cabbie Andrews (did he really keep his donkey in the scullery?).

Explore the history of Winchester through local residents and businesses.  Explore the stories of the people who lived here – from portrait painters to lion tamers and hotel waiters, meet the people who once made this city their home and discover the stories behind some of Winchester’s oldest running businesses including – Kingsgate Books & Prints, Hayward Guitars, and The Colour Factory.

And join Jeremy France Jewellers for a virtual glimpse behind the scenes in their workshop as one of their experienced goldsmith’s hands makes a traditional Lovers Knot Ring.

Join the Great Hall Winchester for a display of classic and sports cars or see the cars in action as they parade around the streets of Winchester.
