Once a year you can experience the railway from a different perspective by walking the ‘Watercress Line’ to raise funds for the Mid Hants Railway Preservation Society. Not only a great way to keep fit, you will also raise much needed funds to help keep the railway going and contribute toward the restoration of the society's locomotive, British Railways Standard Class 4 No. 75079. She's a local engine and in much need of funds to help return her to steam here in Hampshire, with an estimated £200,000.00 required to complete the project.
Take your time and enjoy this scenic walk. There are a variety of walks you can do from a Family stroll from Ropley to Alresford, starting with a free vintage bus ride from Alresford to Ropley 3 miles, to our Downhill from Medstead to Alresford - about 6 miles. For the more adventurous, why not challenge yourself to climb ‘over the Alps’ starting at Alton and complete the full 10 miles?
From track level, you will get to fully appreciate the gradients our locomotives and footplate crews have to tackle to haul trains along our 10 mile line. Walking downhill is much easier than shoveling uphill, so we are told by our Firemen!
Don’t fret, trains will not be running during the walk!
Help us to continue to preserve this important piece of Hampshire’s railway heritage for future generations to enjoy. We value your support.
