Close to Winchester College, this delightful area holds some of the city's best kept shopping secrets.
Located beneath the utterly charming Church of St Swithun is Kingsgate Books & Prints. Here you will find prints and paintings of Winchester as well as antiquarian books. A stone's throw away on College Street, Wells Booksellers stocks an enticing range of books, prints and stationery, including the largest stock of children's books in the region. Whilst you are here, stroll a couple of doors up and take a look at the privately-owned house where Jane Austen spent her final days.
On the corner of College Street and Kingsgate Street is the pretty Cornflowers gift shop, conveniently placed just opposite the award-winning Wykeham Arms.
A couple of doors down, you will find the fascinating Kingsgate Wines & Provisions where all sorts of unexpected treasures can be found. With its dark wood shelving and neatly stacked rows of bottles and jars, entering this corner shop with a difference feels almost like stepping back in time. A real Aladdin's cave, it stocks everything from everyday essentials such as cornflakes and washing-up liquid to luxury foods, fine wines, cheeses and fresh flowers. This is a store where there really is something for everyone.
