South of Alresford lies the pretty village of Cheriton, once the scene of a ferocious Civil War battle. In 1644, a clash of 20,000 Cavaliers and Roundheads ended in disaster for the former in Lamborough Lane, causing it to 'run with blood'. The dead were buried in heaps together and the resulting mounds are still part of the village landscape.
