Since the sack of the Bishop's Palace in 1644 the largest, the most prominent, the best known and the only stone building in Bishop's Waltham has been St Peter's Church. It was founded on the present site in 1136 by Bishop Henry of Blois.
It is almost certain that on every Sunday since, Christian worship has taken place. Until the end of the nineteenth century the church was also the place where the Vestry, forerunner of the Parish Council, met to deal with all matters to do with the town.
We would like to welcome all groups to a guided tour of the church. Whether you are organising activities for children, young people, senior citizens or if you don't have a specific age group in mind - we are there for all.
The visit is secular, not religious. We want to provide you with an opportunity to visit a building which has been at the centre of the life of Bishop's Waltham since the early Middle Ages.
The visit can be designed to meet your needs - we can offer a talk and tour, a short visit or a more thorough one. You can arrange for the visit to take place during the morning, afternoon or evening.
If you would like to organise a visit to St Peter's please phone Peter Watkins, Parish Archivist on 01489 894 789 to make arrangements.
