Tickets are now available for many events at the 2007 Winchester MAYfest, a ten day festival of music, song and dance celebrating traditional and contemporary folk, roots and blues. This year's MAYfest aims to put the event firmly on the map as one of the UK's most popular summer festivals. It features well established acts such as Waterson:Carthy, Spiers and Boden, who were winners of Best Duo Award, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2006, blues band Doctor Teeth Big Band, Phil Beer, Canada's roots band Elliott Brood plus many other great musicians and singers.
The festival runs from 11th to 20th May and benefits from joined-up planning between MAYfest and several highly respected organisations on the local music scene including Tower Arts, SCSX at The Railway and Hayward Guitars. This collaboration demonstrates the gradual shift of the festival towards a wider genre of music in addition to its well established folk music and dance programme.
The organisers are retaining the fun and colourful elements of the former folk festival such as dance sides, pub sessions, sing-arounds, concerts and ceilidhs and feature a new primary school children's ceilidh on the afternoon of Friday 18th May. Many events are free and will be found in various locations throughout Winchester, especially on Saturday 19th May. That particular day will gather pace to end with "One BIG Party" at Winchester's Guildhall. This is MAYfest's main ceilidh which runs alongside a concert of music, song and comedy.
Full details of the events, dates, times and venues will be available soon on Winchester MAYfest's website www.winmayfest.co.uk The site currently includes details of an "Early Bird Ticket" offer of £30 for the three headline events (a saving of £9). These acts are the Waterson:Carthy concert at the Theatre Royal on Thursday 17th May; Spiers & Boden plus support at The Guildhall on Friday 18th May; and "One BIG Party" at The Guildhall on Saturday 19th May. This offer ends on 28th February 2007. The printed programme will be available in April throughout the region.
