Twyford Waterworks - end of season spectacular hots up!

October 4th is your last chance to discover the story of your drinking water at Twyford Waterworks, and what a chance! The usual onsite engines will be joined by a whole host of visiting attractions including steam tractions engines, stationary engines, a fire engine demonstrating the power of water, a miniature steam railway giving rides and displays on pottery, electronic communications and wood working, as well as gift and craft stalls plus and a variety of classic cars.

The site will be open from 11am to 4pm on that day. Admission is only £4.00 for adults with all children under 16 getting in free.

The Friends of King Alfred Buses will be running a free vintage bus service from Winchester Railway Station and the Broadway throughout the day as well as that Edwardian treat, 'mystery tours' of the surrounding countryside. Buses leave the broadway at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm. Full timetable is available on the website

The Waterworks, the only complete Edwardian water pumping station survive into preservation, will be open with two of the mammoth 1930s diesel pumping engines at work during the day. The site also features working water and gas powered engines (steam engines under restoration), Lime Kilns, an industrial railway system and five acres of wildlife meadows with picnic area. Southern Water still pump up to 25 million litres of water from the original wells to supply the local area and the development of water extraction from the massive steam engines to the modern electric pumps is carefully explained. The tea room will be open serving snacks and light lunches, plus the famous home-made cakes!
