Britain’s first ever ‘healthy’ chocolate Easter eggs are being made with watercress

The new super-food, which has health-giving properties, is being added to eggs in time for Easter.

Wendy Akers from the Watercress Alliance said: "This is the first time watercress has ever been used in a chocolate egg.

"It's great to combine something healthy with something a little more indulgent.

"I'm sure it will be delicious - it just shows how versatile watercress is."

The handcrafted eggs are made in Alresford, near Winchester, Hants, which is home to many watercress beds.

The plain chocolate Easter egg is filled with chocolate watercress truffles.

A whole bunch of the salad leaf is used in each of the eggs. The watercress has to be steamed before it is added to the chocolate, to get rid of as much water as possible.

Debbie Carter, owner of The Alresford Chocolate Company, said: "The watercress eggs are surprisingly tasty.

"I think people will want to try these eggs because they're something different.

"I have sold the chocolates at local watercress festivals and they have sold out on both occasions.

"Customers couldn't get enough of the watercress chocolate."

The eggs cost 9.95 pounds including postage.
