The Romans return

There will be free family fun at Winchester City Museum this half-term with a mini-invasion of Romans, including a legionary soldier in full military dress and a lady in all her finery.

Setting up camp from Thursday 21 February to Saturday 23 February are Romans from the Legio Secunda Augusta Living History Society.

Each day, between 10am -- 5pm visitors will be able to find out how the people of Venta Belgarum, the old Roman city of Winchester, lived nearly two thousand years ago.

Robin Iles, Education Officer at Winchester City Council Museums Service, said:

"During the three day 'invasion' there will be lots to see and do. There will be replica Roman objects to handle, you can see the museum's displays of real Roman jewellery, coins and mosaics, and maybe even have your photo taken standing next to a Roman. So remember to bring a camera."

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport, said:

"This event portrays a fascinating and influential period of history in Winchester, and these entertaining and informative re-enactors will help bring the city's Roman history alive for today's inhabitants. "

Admission to this event is free - just turn up. Opening hours: 10am - 5pm each day.
