Military might in King Alfred’s own Country

A consummate warrior who defended Wessex from the Danes, King Alfred the Great looks over Winchester from his viewpoint on the Broadway, and he would have no doubt approved of the District’s military history. This half day itinerary will explore the military history of Winchester, including a visit to the notable military landmark: The Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill.

12.15pm – 1pm: Travel to Fort Nelson

1pm – 1.30pm: Lunch in Fort Nelson’s café.

1.30pm – 2.30pm: Explore Fort Nelson

2.35pm – 3.15pm: Arrive at Winchester’s Military Museums and enjoy a cup of tea at the Café

3.15pm – 5pm: Sample a selection of what Winchester Military Museums have to offer
