A talk by British journalist, author and political commentator, Simon Heffer.

Is it possible to define what we mean by an English identity, or English values, as distinct from those of the rest of the United Kingdom? What is there in English history that might help us define and understand such an identity and such values? In the 500th anniversary year of the Protestant Reformation, it is an appropriate time to look at how the course of English history took a distinct turn after Martin Luther gave Henry VIII the means to set up his own church in 1534, and how England’s break from the European cultural mainstream at that point set it apart from much of the rest of the continent: and what the economic, political, cultural and social consequences of that new direction were, and how they help us understand a coherent idea of Englishness today and for the future, at a time when England (and Britain) is once again looking away from the continent.

Simon James Heffer is a British journalist, author and political commentator.
