Great Minster Street, Little Minster Street, Minster Lane, Southgate Street, St Clement Street & St Thomas Street

Winchester

The Constabulary, as it is now known, once housed royal officials due to the area's proximity to the Royal Palace located in The Cathedral grounds from the 10th Century until its destruction during the Siege of Winchester of 1141.

A Constable was a high royal official who maintained law and order in the Palace precincts. Great Minster Street, Little Minster Street, Minster Lane, Southgate Street, St Clement Street, and St Thomas Street are now known jointly as 'The Constabulary'.

This charming area of the city is made up of winding lanes and cosy corners with many independent shops to explore, selling everything from luxurious home furnishings, vintage clothing, fine wines and handcrafted violins. There are plenty of places to indulge in a steaming cup of tea and slice of freshly baked cake or wile away your evening with a glass of champagne at the internationally acclaimed Hotel du Vin.
